Natura Series Nocturnal Hunters: The Black Backed Jackal

Natura Nocturnal Hunters Series - The Black Backed Jackal

With fossil records found in South Africa, Kenya, and Tanzania dating its lineage back two million years it’s no surprise that the Black Backed Jackal is the star of our 2015 Natura Nocturnal Hunters series.

With fossil records found in South Africa, Kenya, and Tanzania dating its lineage back two million years it’s no surprise that the Black Backed Jackal is the star of our 2015 Natura Nocturnal Hunters series. Following on from the Leopard, which was our Nocturnal Hunter of 2014, this series pays tribute to an impressive and prolific hunter, whose unique appearance is the subject of an evocative San legend. “The Jackal and the Sun” is not the only tale of the Black Backed Jackal that exists throughout the southern countries and eastern coastline of Africa: The Egyptian god of embalming, Anubis, is portrayed as a jackal-headed man and the Senegalese believe the jackal was among the first animals created by the supreme deity of the Serer people.

The Namibians also have a version of the Khoisan’s tale of the sun on the jackal’s back. Many tribes throughout Africa wear jackal skin as a kaross, transferring totemic powers of intelligence through the fetish. It’s no wonder the Black Backed Jackal is so highly regarded. This ancient form of canid has adapted to a wide range of habitats, from city suburbs to the desert, and its versatility has earned it a reputation of cunningness and superior intelligence as well as wit over strength.
