Nelson Mandela - Education
The Protea Series began in 1986 andin 2013 the new series, The Life of a Legend launched. Running from 2013 – 2025 the series features the life of South Africa’s former president, Nelson Mandela.
As part of our ongoing partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation, our 2014 Protea Life of a Legend coin set takes inspiration from Nelson Mandela’s belief that education is the key to changing lives. “Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world,” the global leader once stated – and there was no more powerful reflection of that belief than Madiba’s own education journey. From the time he attended primary school, to his years at the Methodist High School in Clarkesbury and then his pursuit of his university degrees, first at the esteemed University of Fort Hare and later through Unisa, Madiba lived his belief, even under the most difficult circumstances.
The 2014 Protea Life of a Legend coin set complements images of Madiba on his educational journey with some of his many quotes on the pivotal role of education in the lives of all people – not just South Africans. “No country can really develop unless its citizens are educated”. “Everywhere in the world it is accepted that students, as a thinking and independent-minded section of the population, have the right to freedom of thought and expression of opinion.” “The children of today are the leaders of tomorrow and education is a very important weapon to prepare children for their future roles as leaders of the community.” Years after Madiba uttered all of these words, they resonate with a clarity that is unmistakeable and a truth that endures through generations.
